Creating fragrances that you can actually listen to is not a common thing. but it's one men's passion and he is living it daily.
we set down with Michael Partoche for a little chat about life, music, fragrances and passions.
♥ what comes first? The fragrance or the music?
"Each fragrance comes with its original song, that way you can listen to your scent. It’s a unique experience, where your ears and nose can experience something beautiful!
I always think of a story first, or something inspiring and music related, then i write a text and since i don’t have a good voice, i ask to London based musician PAT DAM SMYTH to create music and sing the lyrics that describe the perfume. PAT used to be the bass player in my former band when i used to live in London, he has a beautiful voice that reminds me of Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen etc…"
♥ What channels do you use for sharing your music? "I now have a new band called HAREM NIGHTS, we just launched our first EP 2 months ago. We share our music on Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, Apple Music… But nothing beats Live music! I am glad to play with HAREM NIGHTS for the launch of Room 1015 in Tel Aviv, it’s actually an original way to promote music through perfume and the perfume through music!"
♥ What was your first fragrance and what was your inspiration for it?
"ELECTRIC WOOD was the first one. I wanted to be a guitarist from the age of 6 or so. My parents thought it was a passing episode and that my dreams would change. But it was and remains my dream. At the age of 11, my father returned from a long trip with a huge surprise for me: an original Gibson guitar. My first guitar. I will not forget the special scent I smelled when I opened the box for the first time, The smell of Gibson: the unique combination of lacquer, wood and metal, an amazing scent that excites me to this day, the smell of a new musical instrument. I tried to capture that memory into a bottle..."
♥ Why ROOM 1015?
"It use to be the most notorious room at the Continental Hyatt Hotel, aka the "Riot House” . The 70s was a decade of total delirium for any self-respecting rock group. And L.A. was an inevitable stop on the journey. The motorcycles in the hallways, the rooftop pool overflowing with bubbles, Jim Morrison dangling from a balcony, the epic battles of Keith Moon from The Who.... Today, Room 1015 remains a place of contemplation. The nostalgia of an era of absolute freedom, where the air still holds the lingering smells of sweat, leather, fur and alcohol..."
♥ Can you see yourself doing something else today?
"My real passion is music. when I was young, I did not think that I could earn a living and studied pharmacy until I received my doctorate. with time, I realized that in my work I was more attracted to the side of grooming and perfume than to drugs.
The music was always there, but then came the point where I decided to combine my two passions and create something of my own.
Today I do not see myself working in "ordinary day job" all my life... I want to create my own truth"
♥ What's next? "A new fragrance will be launched in October, inspired by 70’s groupies of Hollywood and called ... The perfume is made by the talented perfumer Jerome Epinette."
( we smelled it and it's AMAZING!!!)
